Tavaris has been on the scene for quite some time. He had a deal for rapping a long time ago. But that’s not how he and I hooked up. We met trhough my man Buka and me and Tavaris just kinda vibed. Since Tavaris and I have been recording for so long, we obviously have tons of songs in the vaults. However, we couldn’t go back that far. So we took an old favorite of everyone we know, Smile, redid it and called it Smile Again! That’s why at the end of the song he says “hey J Rawls, I’m gonna hit it like we did last time”

3. Pleasure Before Pain – performed by Eric Roberson
(E. Roberson, J. Rawls)
Written by Eric Roberson for Blue Erro Soul/EMI April Publishing (ASCAP)

What can I say about Erro? He is incredible! Alonzo helped me link up with Eric. In8 Inner-Prizes brought Eric to Columbus for a show and he blew everyone away with his performance. Me and him hooked up and just started building. So for his next show in Columbus, I picked him up from the airport and he came out to the house to chill out. We just started working while watching the N Y Giants. A couple of months later we try to hook up to finish the song. I booked a flight to fly out to NYC to record with him, and we the whole east coast is blanketed with a blizzard! Finally though, two weeks later I made it out and we finished the joint at his incredible studio! I can’t say enough about my man Erro’s lab...raised floor, mic booth, its hot…all in his parents’ basement!

4. Woman Enough (The Apology) – performed by Middle Child
(K. Coullaby, J. Rawls)
Written by Kenesha Coullaby for Barefeet Entertainment (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls

This song was just a little interlude we did because Middy was feeling the beat. After we finished it and started living with it, we knew we had something special. It’s so catchy right?

5. Soul (again & again) – performed by Middle Child
(K. Coullaby, J. Rawls)
Written by Kenesha Coullaby for Barefeet Entertainment (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Saxophone by Jarrard Harris

I had met my man Bobby Ferguson through my man Romine. One weekend BJ and I were recording and we needed a singer for a hook. Bobby was chillin’ in the lab with us and told me he had a singer. He called her and she came over right away. Her name was Middle Child, and I really can’t describe how she blew me away. I guess the fact that she is all over this album should say enough. But Middy (that’s what I call her) came in and listened to the song and blessed it in less than an hour. This is the first solo song that we ever did together. I knew from that point on that I would have to do much work with Middy.

6. Inhale, Exhale - performed by Venus Malone featuring Wordsworth

Of course I had already known Venus for quite some time. We had worked together for her album on Groove Attack. Its funny, I had to meet her through people all the way in Germany yet she is from Columbus like me. She always shows me love and she and I had recorded Inhale just on a humbug. She didn’t really feel it at first but I think she eventually began to feel it. I took her and Jonell out to Las Vegas to finish recording with my man Coach. We had a ball out in Sin City but most of all we touched up the joints and made them hot. Then just by chance, my man Words was coming to Columbus. He was doing a show at Wittenberg University. I spoke to him and every time we see each other we try to build. So I emailed him the track and he had it done the same day. By the time he came to Ohio, it was nothing. Me and Big June rolled down to Wittenberg, hooked up the pro tools in the hotel room…magic! Words blessed this one!

7. Questions - performed by Tavaris
(T. Carter, J. Rawls)
Written by Tavaris for Hip Hop Serenade Music (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Contact Tavaris at: www.niccicheeks.com, niccicheeks@yahoo.com
This is the joint that Tavaris just had to do. I had made this beat for the US3 remix I did. However, it didn’t quite go with the song very well so I let him check the beat one day. After that, he kept calling me like “Rawls I have to get this one off my chest. It goes perfect with the beat.” And he was right; this is one of those joints that just kept growing on me…

8. Inside of Me – performed by Middle Child
(K. Coullaby, J. Rawls)
Written by Kenesha Coullaby for Barefeet Entertainment (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Contact Middle Child at: www.barefeetent.com, daallstarkid@yahoo.com
This was an experiment for me. I used all keyboard sounds and tried to make a slower tempo beat. At first I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. But I think it came out nice. I let Middy hear the beat and she was feeling it. She came in and blessed the track with no problem.

9. Miss You (Bring it Back) - performed by Jonell
(S. Showes, J. Rawls)
Written by Jonell for Jonell Music (pending)
Recorded at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls; and at The Film Room Studio, Las Vegas, NV by Coach; and at Hitmaker Music, Cincinnati, OH by Sean Kennedy
Mixed at The Film Room Studio, Las Vegas, NV by Coach Background Vocals by Jonell and Steve Anderson
Contact Jonell at: info@3minds.net
I met Jonell through my man Rashidi. I got her number called her up and within a week she came up to Columbus ready to work. Jonell’s work ethic is unquestionable. She came into my studio with songs ready to go. We ended up tracking about 3 songs in less than 4 hours. The girl is amazing. Girl anytime you ready to work, hit me up!

10. ILL Connect performed by Sol Uprising
(S. Epps, J. Robinson, J. Rawls)
Written by Sol Uprising for A Little Science Music (ASCAP) and Japanubia Music (ASCAP)
Recorded by Lil Sci at SolVizion Studios, Los Angeles, CA
Mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Contact Sol Uprising at: www.soluprising.com or info@soluprising.com
Ever since I first heard Powers of Nine Ether by Scienz of Life, I have been a fan of Lil Sci. Son has one of the dopest voices I have ever heard and his delivery is crazy. Last year when he and Stacey dropped the Sol Uprising album, I knew I wanted to work with them. I just didn’t know when I would have a chance. The chance finally came with this project. When Sci finally hit me back with the finished product…I knew it was on!

11. What If performed by Middle Child
(K. Coullaby, J. Rawls)
Written by Kenesha Coullaby for Barefeet Entertainment (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Contact Middy at: www.barefeetent.com or daallstarkid@yahoo.com
This is Middy’s favorite joint. She said as soon as she heard this beat she knew it was hers. Of course you know I love this beat; it inspired me to write to it. But I love what she did with it. She took it to the next level!

12. This Can’t Be Love – performed by Tavaris
(T. Carter, J. Rawls)
Written by Tavaris for Hip Hop Serenade Music (BMI)
Recorded and mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Contact Tavaris at: www.niccicheeks.com or niccicheeks@yahoo.com
Tavaris and I did this joint right after we recorded Without You for Nicci Cheeks Hip-Hop Love/Soul album. This one was fun to do cuz Taz went straight with the melody.

13. Bailar – performed by Aloe Blacc
(E. N. Dawkins, J. Rawls)
Written by Nathaniel Dawkins for Dirty Science Music (ASCAP)
Recorded at the Monmouth Dirty Science Lab, Los Angeles, CA by Aloe Blacc
Mixed at The Spot, Columbus, OH by J Rawls
Trumpets performed by Aloe Blacc
Contact Aloe at: www.aloeblacc.com, info@aloeblacc.com
So I begin telling cats that I am working on this album and my man Demian tells me about Aloe. I knew who Aloe was but I was not aware that he sang. Demi got me a contact and it was on from there. We had to do the joint low budget style and it still turned out to be one of the hottest joints. The latin flava is my favorite anyway, and Aloe showed out on that track!
